DIE POTEMKINSCHE STADT erzählt vom Leben und Überleben in den modernen Trabantenstädten Europas. Es gibt im Film Städte, die es nicht mehr gibt – die Metastase Wulfen im Ruhrgebiet – und solche, die erst kommen werden – die Megastädte im Süden von Madrid. Es gibt eine Betonstadt am Rande von Amsterdam, die heute zum größten schwarzen Ghetto Europas geworden ist; und ein Banlieue bei Paris, in dem Rassismus und Drogen das Leben bestimmen. Es gibt Häuser, aus denen das Leben herausgetrieben wurde, in denen Menschen wie Fremdkörper wirken. Es gibt den vitalen Überlebenskampf der in die Städte Vertriebenen, der aus den Städten Verstoßenen. Und es gibt Musik von Albert Mangelsdorff.

DIE POTEMKINSCHE STADT tells of life and survival in the modern satellite towns of Europe. In the film, there are cities that no longer exist – the metastasis of Wulfen in the Ruhr region – and those that are yet to come – the mega-cities in the south of Madrid. There is a concrete city on the outskirts of Amsterdam that has now become the largest black ghetto in Europe; and a banlieue near Paris where racism and drugs rule life. There are houses from which life has been driven out, where people seem like foreign bodies. There is the vital struggle for survival of those driven into the cities, of those expelled from the cities. And there is music by Albert Mangelsdorff.
